The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office patrols all 1,044 square miles of Houghton County providing year round service to our community.

Their responsibilities are conducting proactive policing, enforce and investigate criminal law violations, monitor traffic violations, investigate motor vehicle crashes and provide emergency and non-emergency assistance to persons in a variety of incidents from domestic assaults and missing persons to delivering a death notification and officers of the courts (transports, bailiffs, etc.) The Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol has responsibility for over 37,000 residents in 14 townships.

Every month our fleet travels 12,000-14,000 miles within the county to make our community a safer place. Every vehicle in our fleet is equipped with in-vehicle audio/visual recorders for the safety of everyone. In 2022 the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office is moving towards a take home car program that will help save the department money in yearly maintenance costs and vehicle replacements will less be frequent. This will also decrease response time throughout the county and increase visibility of the department.
